Welcome to the shade

What this site is, why it exists, and what you'll find here.

I have 847 games in my Steam library. I’ve beaten maybe 50 of them. The pile grows every sale. The time doesn’t.

If that sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.

Who this is for

This site is for parents who game. Not parents who “used to game.” Not parents who are “waiting until the kids are older.” Parents who still find time, somehow, even if that time is 10:30 PM on a Tuesday after the house finally goes quiet.

We’re the ones who buy games on sale and add them to the backlog. Who start RPGs and never finish them. Who fell asleep on the couch with a controller in our hands more than once.

We love games. We just don’t have 40 hours a week to give them anymore.

What this site does differently

Most gaming sites are written by people who play games for a living. That’s fine. But their perspective is fundamentally different from ours.

They can sink 60 hours into something before forming an opinion. They can keep up with every release. They can play games the week they come out instead of three years later when they finally go on sale.

I can’t do any of that. So this site looks at games through a different lens: does this game respect limited time?

That means:

  • Can you play for 30 minutes and feel like you did something?
  • Can you put it down for a week and pick it back up without feeling lost?
  • Does the save system let you quit when life interrupts?
  • Is it worth the money for the time you’ll actually spend?
  • Does it pad itself with grind, or does it respect your hours?

The Dad-Friendly Scorecard

Every review includes a scorecard. Not a number out of 10. A breakdown of the things that actually matter to us.

Session length. Pick-up-ability. Save system. Value. Grind factor.

Plus a verdict: Dad’s Choice, Recommended, With Caveats, Time Sink Warning, or Skip It.

Because “8.5/10” doesn’t tell me if I can play this for 45 minutes after the kids are in bed.

What you’ll find here

Reviews with the Dad-Friendly Scorecard. Honest assessments of whether a game works for limited time.

Tonight’s Pick for when you have an hour and can’t decide what to play.

Features about games worth your time, guides for busy players, lists of short games and quick sessions.

Backlog Confessions where I talk about the eternal pile of unplayed games we all have.

Retro coverage of older games worth revisiting, because sometimes the best game for tonight is something from 2007.

The name

“Shade tree mechanic” is someone who works on cars in their driveway. Not a professional, but skilled through years of doing it themselves.

That’s me with games. Not a professional critic. Just someone who’s been playing since the NES days and has opinions about what works for people with limited time.

Let’s be realistic

I can’t cover every release. I can’t post daily content. I have a job, three kids, and a finite number of hours.

What I can do is write honestly about the games I play and whether they work for people like us. Quality over quantity. Useful over frequent.

Thanks for being here

If you’re reading this, you’re probably in the same boat. Limited time. Big backlog. Still finding moments to play.

That’s enough. We’re still gamers. We just game differently now.
